Family Law circles in Australia often say that there are busier periods of the year which may typically include the periods following Easter, school holidays and the Christmas/New Year holidays. But is there any truth to this theory?
Recent articles in the US and published by the Sydney Morning Herald appear to support this observation.
According to these studies, the largest increase in parties separating tends to be in the weeks following the Christmas/New Year period.
Unfortunately the ABS does not retain statistics about the date of the filing of divorce applications. See our previous article concerning ABS divorce statistics in Australia by clicking here. In addition no statistics are maintained about when people separate.
NOTE – the filing of a divorce provides little indication of when a relationship ended due to the fact the in Australia you are required to have separated from your spouse for at least 12 months prior to filing a divorce application.
