The Australian Bureau of Statistics released the 2014 data for divorce rates this week. Last year in Australia there were 46,498 divorces granted, a decrease of 2.4% (1,140) from the 47,638 divorces granted in 2013.
Age Statistics For Separation And Divorce
The highest percentage of divorces granted in 2014 were with people between 40-44 years of age, with 16.4% of males and 17.5% of females being granted a divorce in that age group.
Divorces Involving Children
Last year there were 21,840 divorces involving children (under 18 years of age), representing 47.0% of all divorces granted.
The median duration of marriage to divorce in Australia was 12 years in 2014, with the median duration to separation being 8.4 years.
Western Australian Divorce And Separation
In Western Australia in 2014, 4518 applications for divorce were granted, highlighting a significant decrease on the previous years figure of 5268 (14.2%) and was the largest decline of all the states and territories. All recorded decreases except one (Victoria).
The divorce statistics for Western Australia show the average divorce age for males was 45.7 years and for females 42.9 years of age.
2100 divorce applications were joint, with 1307 being female and the remaining 1111 being male.
In 2014, the median length of a marriage before separation was 8.8 years and to divorce it was 12.4 years.
